How to Read a Blood Test Report: Key Metrics Explained
Blood test reports are dense with abbreviations, reference ranges, and numbers that mean nothing without context. The goal of this guide is not to replace your doctor — it is to help you understand what the report is actually saying so you can ask better questions and spot the metrics worth discussing.
The structure of a report
Most reports are organized into panels, each measuring a family of related markers. The three you will see most often are the complete blood count (CBC), the metabolic panel (glucose, kidney and liver markers), and the lipid panel (cholesterol). Each line typically shows the test name, your value, the laboratory's reference range, and often a flag for values outside that range.
Reference ranges matter more than any single number: they vary by laboratory, age, sex, and even altitude. A value flagged high or low is a starting point for discussion, not a diagnosis.
Complete blood count (CBC)
- Hemoglobin (Hb) — carries oxygen in red blood cells. Low hemoglobin is the classic sign of anemia and shows up as fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath.
- White blood cells (WBC) — your immune system's army. Elevated counts often point to infection or inflammation; low counts can indicate immune suppression, but many healthy people sit at the lower edge of normal.
- Platelets — help blood clot. Very low platelets increase bleeding risk; very high counts warrant investigation for underlying conditions.
- MCV and MCH — describe the size and hemoglobin content of red cells. They help distinguish types of anemia, such as iron deficiency versus B12 deficiency.
Glucose and diabetes markers
Fasting blood glucose is the standard screening test. A single elevated reading is not diabetes — stress, a recent meal, or a poor night's sleep can all nudge it up. Doctors usually repeat the test or order HbA1c, which measures average blood sugar over roughly three months and is far harder to game with a single good day.
The lipid panel
- LDL cholesterol — the “bad” cholesterol that builds up in artery walls. Lower is generally better, and targets are stricter if you already have heart disease or diabetes.
- HDL cholesterol — the “good” cholesterol that helps remove LDL. Higher is generally better, though extremely high levels are less clearly beneficial.
- Triglycerides — a fat in the blood that rises after fatty or sugary meals. Fasting before the test matters a lot here; high triglycerides are often improved with diet and exercise.
Liver and kidney markers
ALT and AST are enzymes that leak into the blood when liver cells are stressed or damaged — common culprits are medications, alcohol, and fatty liver. Creatinine and the eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) reflect how well your kidneys filter waste. Mild elevations are common and frequently return to normal, but persistent trends deserve attention.
What to do with your numbers
- Compare each value against the reference range on your report, not a range you found online
- Look at trends — one reading means little; a pattern across two or three reports means much more
- Write down the flags and your questions before the appointment
- Ask about lifestyle changes that move the specific markers that are off
